World leaders meet in Japan

Jun 28, 2019

Japan is playing the role of the host, but relations between the United States and China are at the forefront.

This year's topics are trade, innovation, the environment and employment.

Historically, the G20 is a group of the world's 20 largest economies that emerged from the G7 summit of world finance ministers in 1999 at the height of the Asian financial crisis. It includes 19 countries in addition to the European Union and accounts for about 85% of world economic output, two-thirds of the world's population and 75% of international trade. In 2008, USA President George W. Bush convened the G20 in an emergency meeting to try to end the financial crisis, but his mission expanded to cover a wider range of global economic and political issues.

Topics to be discussed this year:

Global Economy, Trade and Investment, Innovation, Environment and Energy, Employment, Women's Empowerment, Health.

These are all important issues and many of them are interrelated. The trade war between China and the United States is closely linked to many of these issues this year and will be the focus of many investors. It is expected that the meetings between President Trump and President Xi will be productive and they will find a common position on trade issues, but there are many complicating factors.

The first is the increase in tariffs that both countries impose on each other. The trade battle between the United States and China is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. The Peterson Institute for International Economics notes that China is actually cutting tariffs on all other countries except the United States. This will make it difficult for the United States to find sympathetic listeners among other G20 representatives.

We cannot talk about the global economy, trade, innovation and employment, without mentioning the 5G network. 5G is also known as 5th generation wireless technology. 5G will power the Internet of Things and the automation process. This is a "continuous" wireless signal that is 100-1000 times stronger than a 4G network.

At the heart of the trade war between the United States and China is the issue of Forced Technology Transfer and 5G, the super-powerful wireless signal that will allow the Internet of Things.

The United States claims that China requires foreign companies selling in the Chinese market to disclose technical specifications of Chinese companies, which allows China to copy these projects and software.

As 5G will power the next generation of technology and communications devices and technology will penetrate even more into people's privacy as well as at the governmental level, the United States does not want China to create devices and networks for users in the United States who use 5G.

The United States is working to stop the use of technology created by Huawei, arguing that the Chinese government, which has significant control over local companies, could use the technology to spy on citizens of other countries. The United States has banned Huawei from cooperating with the federal government.
