The key US market indices ended in a negative zone for the seventh consecutive week. This is the longest losing streak from over ten years. The S&P 500 approaches the territory of the bear market with its 17% decline. Investors remain worried for the potential impact of the inflation over the economy, the future aggressive increase of interest rates, and the slowdown of the growth in corporations’ profits.According to MSCI EAFE and MSCI EM indices, international stocks rose this week. MSCI EM increased slightly. One of the reasons for this is that while most central banks are imposing tight regimes, because of their tries to fight the high inflation, the Chinese government does the exact opposite in order to support its economy. International stocks were also supported by the current weakening of the US dollar.
Bonds
The Bloomberg Aggregate Bond Index ended higher for second consecutive week. Considered by the investors as a shelter, bonds were supported along the sales of stocks. As a result, the profitability of 10-year bonds continues to decline.
Corporate bonds with high profitability, traced by the Bloomberg High Yield index, ended the week negatively, while continuing its downward trajectory for 2022.
Raw Materials
The price of natural gas continued to increase and ended steadily on a positive zone. The discussion about the implication of US tariffs, as well as EU sanctions on Russian oil, create an additional pressure on the price of energy. The prices of key materials like gold, silver, and copper performed well after their decline for the last three weeks.
