Metaverse: Innovation opportunities

Jul 22, 2022

Recently, one of the most discussed topics is the metaverse. In 2021 searches of the term increased by 7,200%. In December, Facebook changed its name to Meta (part of the MF Compass Global Trends portfolio), and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced his ambition to "help bring the meta universe to life." A month later, Microsoft said that their proposed acquisition of gaming giant Activision provided "building blocks for the metaverse." In addition, again in 2021. companies related to the metaverse have managed to raise over $10 billion. This is twice as much as the previous year.

What exactly is the virtual world? Currently, stakeholders cannot agree on a single definition. But most descriptions have some elements in common:

  • The metaverse includes immersive environments, often (but not always) using virtual or augmented reality technology.
  • The metaverse is "always on" and exists in real time.
  • The metaverse spans the virtual world, the physical world, as well as numerous other platforms.
  • The metauniverse is powered by a fully functioning virtual economy, often (but not always) built on cryptocurrency, digital goods and assets, including the recently hyped Tokens (NFTs).
  • The metaverse allows people to have a virtual identity, presence, even run a business. Transactions, world-building and interactions between partners are possible.

The metaverse is best characterized as an evolution of today's Internet—it's something we're immersed in instead of something we watch from the sidelines. It has the capacity to realize the promise of vast digital realities parallel to our physical world. For marketers, the metaverse represents an opportunity to engage consumers in a whole new way, while pushing a brand's internal capabilities and innovation in new directions.

Skepticism on the subject is still high and many companies are wary of the metaverse. The promise, or more precisely the realization of the idea, will take time to become an effective medium for advertising and implementing business plans. After all, we are on the verge of a fundamental change in the way we will use the Internet over time. The situation is similar to the sentiment surrounding the Internet in the 1990s. No one knew which company would shape the new technology, yet consumers flocked to it, interest in turn leading to fundamental change. Similarly, consumer attraction to today's metaverse shows a major shift in the way people use technology. Therefore, if we accept that the virtual world is another evolution of the Internet, marketers and businesses in general should not pass lightly on the opportunities for advertising of a new kind.
