Booking Holdings, formerly known as Priceline.com, is the world's largest travel agency. It connects travelers and hotels, facilitates the organization and budgeting of various purpose-driven trips. The company offers over 2.5 million properties in 220 countries on its site. All listings are detailed with photos, reviews and details of the amenities offered in each property. Accommodation options offered by the site range from hotels and motels to houses and apartments, hostels, bed and breakfasts and more. The company dominates the travel booking funnel and collects revenue from hotel bookings made through the site. Booking.com is particularly strong in Europe, where large hotel chains are less popular and smaller independent hotels and lodgings rely on it to fill their rooms.
In addition to Booking.com, the company owns agoda.com, priceline.com, rentalcars.com, OpenTable and the flight search engine KAYAK. Hotel reservations account for the majority of revenue, but the company also offers services such as car rental reservations, flights, holiday packages, cruises, tours, airport transfers, and more.
The business also has huge network effects (built on a foundation of mutual benefit). Users are more inclined to use a booking platform with the largest possible choice of property types, the widest availability of reviews and quality customer service, and hotels and private properties to provide accommodation to booking.com due to the high traffic of the site. Booking.com works in two ways: as an agency that represents hotels, from which it collects fees, and the merchant model, where the company pre-purchases the night and then tries to resell it at a better price.
On August 3, the company announced its results for the second quarter of 2022. Expectations for the company to report earnings per share of $17.73 were met, even beaten, to $21.07. For comparison for the second quarter of 2021. the company announced a loss of $4.08 per share. Booking Holdings' total revenue for the second quarter of 2022 totaled $4.3 billion, an increase of 99% over the prior-year quarter. Nights booked for this period also increased - by 56% compared to the previous year's quarter.
Booking Holdings CEO Glen Vogel said: “We have reached another milestone in the company's recovery from the impact of the pandemic. For the first time since its inception, the number of overnight stays exceeded the levels of 2019."
According to him, record revenues are expected in the third quarter of 2022, as the summer tourist season is extremely busy.
